The symposium Gazes on Greenland, which took place at The Greenlandic House in Aarhus, was presented by Galleri Image in collaboration with ASSINGA (a cooperation between rum46, Nuuk Art Museum and Aarhus Feminist Collective) and Art Weekend Aarhus. The symposium facilitated discussions and debates where different points of view on art from and about Greenland were processed.
The symposium was arranged in conjunction with the exhibition Good Hope Keepers and the Mirrored Portraits of the Ocean at Galleri Image by the Greenlandic artist Inuuteq Storch, which juxtaposed 19th century Greenland with the Greenland of today. In the exhibition, Inuuteq Storch’s own contemporary photographs of his hometown Sisimiut were presented alongside photos taken by Greenland’s first photographer John "Ujuut" Møller from the period 1889-1935. The works in the exhibition spanned more than 100 years, and explored the development of the geographic identity as seen from the perspective of the Greenlandic people.
