Virgile Novarina and Walid Breidi are the creators of the art project Sleep in the City, which consistet of video installations and performances that occured at select locations in Aarhus from 15 June - 22 June.

Sleep in the City is an interdisciplinary project with the intention of bringing the city of Aarhus together with its residents through data visualisation. Walid Breidi and Virgile Novarina used the piece to get the citizens to reflect on the importance of sleep and how our relationship to the city environment affects us when we sleep.

As part of Sleep in the City, Galleri Image invited the artist Virgile Novarina into the gallery space, where he stayed the night from 17 June to 18 June. Here he carried out his ”sleep performance” equipped with a headband that measured his five primary brain waves. While he slept, a video loop with clips from Aarhus taken by local residents were shown in a gallery window. The video was transformed in real time by city data (noise, traffic, air quality etc.) and sleep data from volunteers from Aarhus and Novarina himself.

Sleep in the City was a part of IoT week Aarhus 2019.
Novarina carried out his sleep performance at six other locations in Aarhus.
