Photobook Week Aarhus 2019
In 2019, Photobook Week Aarhus (PWA) took place from 3 - 6 October and was filled with exciting talks, book market and exhibitions.

Photobook Week Aarhus 2019 examined the theme “Flatness”, both in a metaphorical and in a literal sense. One of our key shows in this framework was New Topographics in Photobooks, curated by Thomas Wiegand. It featured selected works of the main participants of the legendary exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape and its lasting effect on landscape photography, as well as reactions and parallels especially from Germany. Other exhibitions also questioned the seemingly flat surface of the book: Book objects, leporello books, foldable maps and other techniques that defy the flatness of the page, were in the center of our attention.

The festival’s regional theme was on
Chilean and Swedish photobooks. Another highlight has been Asia 8, featuring the winners of the Steidl Book Award in collaboration with the Singapore International Photo Festival, which are still on display at Galleri Image. The show Rebellious Photobook, curated by Jose Luis Neves (watch his talk at PWA15), was a small showcase of books that attempt to deconstruct the inherent ‘flatness’ of the page, either by subverting the reading process or exploring the material orthodoxy of the codex.

Other important exhibitions in the festival were an exhibition with
Lasse Krog Møller’s oeuvre entitled Twenty-six artist’s books —some of them can also be considered as photobooks at ARoS Art Museum and Stijn Van der Linden’s newly published photobookAn essay on the concave city corner, at Dokk1 Library.

Since 2014, Galleri Image and the Aarhus School of Architecture have collaborated on organising Photobook Week Aarhus. PWA focuses on the rapidly growing international interest in photobooks in recent years and represents a continuous study of the evolution and role of the medium.

PWA presents the photobook to the general public and to individuals who work professionally with photobooks and photography, be it from an artistic, communication-related or academic standpoint. User involvement, openness and dialogue are key words when it comes to the form and content of the festival. For this reason, PWA has placed great emphasis on inviting a large number of exhibitors and speakers who can present the photobook in a cross-disciplinary perspective. This has made it possible to exhibit significant but rare photobooks that have been discussed by researchers, photographers, leading curators, architects, representatives of The Danish School of Media and Journalism, and many other qualified contributors from around the world.

Photobook Week Aarhus 2019 was the 6th edition of the festival, which is a collaboration between Galleri Image and Aarhus School of Architecture. The festival is curated by national and international experts under the leadership of Chief Curator Moritz Neumüller and the curatorial team: Anne Elisabeth Toft, Beate Cegielska and Jesper Rasmussen.
