The 5th edition of Photobook Week Aarhus took place between the 4th and the 7th of October, with events hosted at the Aarhus School of Architecture, Galleri Image, ARoS, Verpan and Dokk1.

Photobook Week Aarhus is a photo book festival that convey the photo book in a current and historical perspective to the general public as well as to those who work professionally with the photo book and the photo. Here the audience will meet rare, groundbreaking and unique photo books at exhibitions composed by leading experts.

The programme offers exhibitions, lectures, debates, artist talks, photobook dummy reviews, workshops and photo books with selected publishers. The audience will have the opportunity to contribute to the festival in interaction with exhibitions and events. Visitors will also have the opportunity to present their own photo books.

This year's theme, "The Virtual and the Physical", focused on social digital development and its importance for the photo book. The festival discussed the digitalisation of photography and highlight concepts such as virtual reality and hyperrealism by looking at their cultural imagery. The discussion of the festival thus fits into the current social debate about the future of the book and the digital formation of the population. The festival will illustrate in a historical perspective how the photo book and its image practices have acted as a catalyst for the development of the experience of special places and the city's life. This perspective constitutes a central understanding framework for the festival's discussions on mediated perception, phenomenology, photographic representation and visualization. About differences and similarities of analog and digital photography, about new expressions, virtual reality and about the tactile qualities of the book.

All of this takes place in an eventful program that invites the audience to participate in a groundbreaking festival and immerse themselves in the various exhibitions and activities. Hence, the purpose of the festival is to create a foundation that gives the public more insight into the multifaceted landscape of the photobook and its special qualities. The festival allows the audience to experience and participate in a vital area of the art scene close up. In a world where almost everyone contributes to the global image flow through social media, the festival can draw attention to how the physical photo book allows for a rare immersion.

This year, a Photobook Week Aarhus Dummy Award launched, which allows the winner to publish his own photo book to a reputable publisher.
