We can no longer ignore the crises at hand; massive populations have been flooding across borders in numbers that would have been incomprehensible to most of us a decade ago. Of course, this is not a new phenomenon – just look back in our collective histories and you will see the continuing ebb and flow of economic and conflict migrations; ongoing catastrophes that have involved multiple cultures for centuries. Many of us need only to look back in our own family histories to see that at some point our own relatives have been part of mass movements across the globe.
As we look for a deeper understanding of this present day situation, there is the need to put a face on it so that we can comprehend the bigger picture of this unimaginable situation. Using photography and video, the artists in the group exhibition, In-Between / In Transit explore the plight of refugees caught in this limbo, traversing a no man’s land between home and hope. The exhibition illustrates the boredom, sadness, fear and apathy that fill the lives of those stranded within the confines of forced emigration as they flee unsafe homelands in hope of finding a more secure future elsewhere. For each of the artists presented, the themes of emigration and conflict have touched them in their own lives and their personal stories can be felt in these works.

Each artist will make a short presentation on their practice, followed by an open discussion with the audience.
An afternoon seminar looking at the makers in the exhibition – ‘In Between / In Transit’ to be held at Galleri Image on Sunday, May 29 at 2:00 PM. The seminar is part of the programme for Art Weekend Aarhus.
