The historical process to date has deposited in you an infinity of traces, without leaving an inventory  – Antonio Gramsci, The Prison Notebooks

This show is inspired by Gramsci’s idea that history deposits in us an infinity of traces that ultimately form our identity. However, they lack an inventory in order to give the history shape and sense. The gathering of such inventory can come from traces of heredity, individual and collective traditions, relations or experiences.

Compile Your Inventory brings together a series of new works; in which layered analogue colour photograms form an abstract narrative of collages to explore a dynamic of kinship, dislocation and displacement.
Drawing inspiration from her South Korean heritage, Nissen sources traces from personal memory and creating an inventory of shapes, signs and symbols, that are related the South Korean traditional culture. These works can be seen as fragments of identity being compiled through reinterpretation and examining the boundaries of what is already known and what is foreign.
A driving interest in her practice is the in-between state of the authentic and the constructed, real and imaginative. Photography in particular, becomes a medium that motivates this ambiguity and ultimately forms the narratives and memories, which cannot be represented in language or thought.
