It is with
great pleasure that Galleri Image presents:
The State
of L3: "Piertopia"
8 April -
22 May 2011

The art collective The State of L3
- the name refers to the DNA code of people West Africa origin
- was established back in 2006 by the Dutch-Panamanian artist
and film-maker Antonio Jose Guzman. Networked through Amsterdam
(Holland), Dakar (Senegal) and Recife (Brazil) this international
artist collective involves itself with art, multimedia exchanges,
modern trends and policy issues. The nationally tripartite make-up
of The State of L3 references a triangule of three continents
that have historically linked Dutch colonial and commercial rule
to the wider African diaspora.
Aiming to understand and examine
links between African ancestry, immigration and visual culture,
The State of L3 proposes a series of walkways and jetties inside
the Galleri Image. These inter-connected constructions display
images and projections from various countries and landscapes.
The structure of this installation, once again, refers symbolically
to the DNA chain: The exhibit "Piertopia" constitutes
a living DNA database, in exploring which the audience is invited
to inter-act with soundtracks and photographs displaying people
from widely different backgrounds.
The exhibition revolves round a question
of identity, collectively focusing on the hereditary ties of the
African slaves who were transported to Brazil or Suriname in the
time of Dutch colonial rule. The artists making up The State of
L3 seek a common visual language that can tell the unique cultural
history and background of the Africans, as well as emphasizing
their common genetic ties with contemporary Africa. The question
being explored is whether it is permissible to speak of a collective
African memory and thereby to find new ways of understanding African
identity - granted the fact that the African gene is widespread
throughout the world.
The large-scale exhibition and installation
project "Piertopia" is created specifically for Galleri
Image, and will subsequently be shown in Amsterdam, Dakar and
Recife. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published
by Galleri Image
